Powder-Actuated Tool Certification and Use

29 CFR 1926.302 · This talk in Spanish

Why it matters

A powder-actuated tool is a firearm that shoots nails: a gunpowder charge drives a fastener into concrete or steel at bullet speed. Misused, pins blow through base material and hit people on the other side of walls. That is why OSHA requires operators to be trained and certified on the specific tool, and why the rules read like range rules. Today we treat the PAT like the firearm it is.

Crew discussion questions

  1. Who on this crew is certified, and for which tool models?
  2. What is on the other side of the walls and decks we are shooting this week?
  3. Where are charges stored, and how do we dispose of misfires?
  4. When was our tool last cleaned and inspected?
