Table Saw and Miter Saw Station Safety
29 CFR 1926.304 · This talk in Spanish
Why it matters
The cut station makes thousands of cuts a week, and every one puts fingers inches from a blade spinning at 4,000 RPM. Table saw kickback throws lumber at 100 miles an hour, and miter saws take fingertips when hands creep inside the fence line. OSHA woodworking tool rules require guards and safe feeds. Today we set up the station right and keep hands where blades are not.
Hazards
- ⚠ Kickback from the table saw throwing stock at the operator
- ⚠ Hands pulled into blades cutting small or short pieces
- ⚠ Guards and riving knives removed and never reinstalled
- ⚠ Cluttered stations: offcuts underfoot, cords in the walkway
- ⚠ Cutting warped, wet, or nail-embedded reclaimed lumber
- ⚠ Dust clouds and noise exposure at busy stations
Controls and safe practices
- ✓ Guards on, riving knife or spreader in place on the table saw; if a special cut needs the guard off, it goes back on immediately after.
- ✓ Push sticks and push blocks for anything within 6 inches of the blade.
- ✓ Stand out of the kickback line and keep helpers out of it too.
- ✓ Miter saw: hands outside the fence marks, let the blade stop before lifting, and clamp short pieces.
- ✓ Keep the station clear: offcuts binned, cords overhead or covered, level footing.
- ✓ Inspect lumber for nails, staples, and grit before it meets the blade.
- ✓ Eyes and ears at the station, every cut.
Crew discussion questions
- Are the guards actually on our saws right now, and where is the riving knife?
- Who cuts most on this crew, and what are their close-call stories?
- Where do offcuts go so they are not underfoot by noon?
- What cuts do we make that need a jig instead of fingers?
