Propane Heater Safety and Clearances
29 CFR 1926.153 · 29 CFR 1926.154 · This talk in Spanish
Why it matters
Propane heaters are everywhere in winter, and so are the fires they start: a heater tipped against poly sheeting, a cylinder stored inside overnight, a hose kinked against a hot casing. Propane is heavier than air, so leaks pool low and wait for a spark. OSHA rules for LP gas and temporary heating cover storage, clearances, and connections. Today we go through the checklist that keeps the heat where it belongs.
Hazards
- ⚠ Combustibles too close: poly sheeting, lumber, insulation, tarps
- ⚠ Leaking hoses and fittings pooling propane at floor level
- ⚠ Cylinders stored or changed indoors
- ⚠ Heaters tipping on uneven ground or getting bumped by traffic
- ⚠ Radiant heat igniting materials above and beside the unit
- ⚠ No extinguisher staged near heating operations
Controls and safe practices
- ✓ Keep clearances per the label: typically several feet on all sides, more above; nothing combustible in the radiant path.
- ✓ Leak-test connections with soap solution at every cylinder change; never with a flame.
- ✓ Store cylinders outside, upright, valve-protected, away from exits and traffic per 1926.153.
- ✓ Set heaters level and stable, protected from bumps, on noncombustible footing.
- ✓ Route hoses away from the hot casing and out of walkways.
- ✓ Fire extinguisher within reach of every heating setup, and everyone knows where.
- ✓ Shut valves at the cylinder, not just the heater, at the end of the shift.
Crew discussion questions
- Walk the heaters after this talk: what is inside the clearance zone right now?
- Where are our spare cylinders stored, and is that outside and protected?
- Who leak-tests after cylinder changes, and with what?
- Where is the nearest extinguisher to each heater?
