Noise and Hearing Protection
29 CFR 1926.52 · 29 CFR 1910.95 · This talk in Spanish
Why it matters
Hearing loss is permanent, painless, and slow, which is why nobody takes it seriously until the ringing never stops. A demo saw runs at 110 decibels; damage starts at 85 over a workday. The rule of thumb: if you must shout to be heard at arm’s length, you are losing hearing right now.
Hazards
- ⚠ Saws, grinders, and demo tools above 100 dB
- ⚠ Generators and compressors droning all day near workers
- ⚠ Impact work in enclosed spaces multiplying exposure
- ⚠ Earbuds and music replacing hearing protection
- ⚠ Tinnitus ignored until it becomes permanent
Controls and safe practices
- ✓ Protection required when exposure exceeds the limits in 1926.52. Practically: plugs or muffs for any loud tool work.
- ✓ Plugs inserted right: rolled, pulled ear up, seated deep. A loose plug is decoration.
- ✓ Double up, plugs plus muffs, for demo saws, powder-actuated tools, and enclosed impact work.
- ✓ Move generators and compressors away from work areas; put barriers between noise and people.
- ✓ Take noise breaks; exposure is time times volume.
- ✓ Ringing ears after work is a warning shot. Report it and step up protection.
Crew discussion questions
- Which tasks today need doubled-up protection?
- Can we move the generator or compressor further away?
- Who has ringing ears at the end of shifts?
- Is anyone using earbuds instead of protection?
