Hazard Communication: Know Your Chemicals
29 CFR 1910.1200 · 29 CFR 1926.59 · This talk in Spanish
Why it matters
Adhesives, solvents, fuels, form release, cutting fluids: a job site runs on chemicals, and every container has a story the label and safety data sheet tell. The unlabeled spray bottle is the one that burns someone. If you cannot name what is in it, do not use it.
Hazards
- ⚠ Unlabeled or hand-filled containers with unknown contents
- ⚠ Mixing incompatible products, like chlorine-based cleaners with acids
- ⚠ Breathing vapors in enclosed or low spots where they collect
- ⚠ Skin and eye contact with corrosives and solvents
- ⚠ No access to safety data sheets when something goes wrong
Controls and safe practices
- ✓ Every container gets a label: product name and hazard warning, including transfer bottles.
- ✓ Read the label and SDS before first use of any product. Know the first-aid steps in advance.
- ✓ Use the PPE the SDS calls for: the right gloves, eye protection, and respirator cartridge.
- ✓ Ventilate enclosed work areas. Vapors from adhesives and fuels sink and collect low.
- ✓ Store incompatibles apart. Keep fuels away from oxidizers and ignition sources.
- ✓ Know where the SDS binder or app is, and where the eyewash is, before you need either.
Crew discussion questions
- What chemicals are on this site today and where are the SDS?
- Are there any unlabeled bottles or cans in the trailers or trucks right now?
- Which of today’s tasks happen in enclosed spaces where vapors collect?
- Where is the nearest eyewash or clean water source?
